Home Security at Christmas | Keep Your Home Safe | Swift Direct Blinds

Keep the change, ya filthy animal: The cost of home security this Christmas

As the nights draw in and we’re all forced to wrap up warmer against the cold, it can only mean one thing – Christmas is coming. Up go the lights, the decorations are hauled down from the attic, the turkey is ordered and the sense of excitement and anticipation really starts to build.

The festive season is a magical time for many – a period where we can shake off the stresses and strains of work for a few days and enjoy some quality time with those we love most. For a lot of us, that means heading out to the pub to see our friends and raise a glass, or travelling to stay with relatives up and down the country to catch up over plenty of food and drink.

Unfortunately, however, there are people out there who don’t enter into the Christmas spirit and prefer to take advantage of the increase in unoccupied houses around this time of year. Especially as there might be dozens of valuable presents piled under the tree, waiting to be opened on the big day. With that in mind, it pays to be extra vigilant this Christmas and guard against the threat of burglars…

On Santa’s naughty list

It’s a sad reality that thieves see Christmas as an opportunity to target empty homes in the hope of getting away with their stolen goods undetected. Figures from UKCrimeStats show that in the run up to and immediately after Christmas 2018, the number of burglaries increased, with more than 36,000 recorded in the month of December.

Although it’s easy to get swept up in a tide of festive fun, it’s also worth thinking carefully about how to keep your home secure and ensuring you don’t come downstairs on Christmas morning to find that you’ve been a victim of a burglary. Thankfully, help is at hand…

Keeping the burglars at bay

If you’re concerned about how to keep your home safe this Christmas, worry not! With a liberal sprinkling of Christmas magic, we’ve created a special blind that will ease your fears and allow you to fully enjoy all the festivities. Our blind will create the impression of Christmas revellers inside your home! This blind should help to deter any thieves who might be eyeing up your property as a potential target, and it offers a cost-effective solution when compared to the alternative options explored by Macaulay Culkin in the 1990 Christmas classic Home Alone

“This is my house, I have to defend it”

Accidentally left home alone by his family at Christmas, eight-year-old Kevin McCallister is saddled with the task of protecting his house against hapless thieves Harry and Marv – ‘The Wet Bandits’ – who flood the properties they burgle, leaving behind thousands of pounds worth of damage.

But on this occasion, they’ve met their match, as Kevin sets a number of booby traps into which the pair clumsily stumble. These include:

  • A heated door knob
  • Glue and feathers, which cover Harry’s face
  • Slippery tar on the stairs
  • A falling iron, which smacks Marv in the face
  • Tins of paint being thrown down the stairs
  • A blow torch, which sets Harry’s head on fire

All of these measures are extremely effective in keeping The Wet Bandits at bay, but there can be no doubt that the McCallisters must have been left with hefty repair bills when they eventually returned home to be reunited with Kevin. In fact, we asked MyBuilder.com Head of Trade and Quality, Carl Goulding, to do the sums and provide us with a quote.

And it turns out that fixing all of the damage – including a new door knob, sanding and varnishing the stairs, repairing dents in the floor and walls, fixing the basement that Marv floods next door, not to mention a deep clean of the entire house – would have set the McCallisters back around £9,000!

Sums like that are enough to put a dampener on anyone’s Christmas, so perhaps you’re better off finding other ways to stay vigilant during the festive period!
